Season 2 of Impact Winter, by Travis Beacham, originally published in 2023
Impact Winter is back for season 2, and whilst I wasn’t as taken with this second instalment, I still enjoyed returning to this unique take on vampires and apocalypse!
Much like season 1, Impact Winter is a full-cast audio production, and given the seasonal approach that the story in being delivered in, it’s definitely a unique experience among the different ways in which one can consume stories. The cast does the heavy lifting in a dialogue-centric story such as this, and the audio effects and inclusion of several songs (it felt like there was more music versus season 1) round out the experience, which is immersive, and equal parts eerie and delightful. Additionally, season 2 was 48 minutes longer than season 1, so there was even more of an experience to enjoy!
The story picks up a short time after season 1 (possibly 6 months later?), with Darcy and Felix adjusting to their second lives as vampires, whilst Hope and Penelope hold down the fort for the human crew. The vampire council is growing more desperate to find the winter child of prophecy, sending out their enforces and even venturing out themselves to try and hunt down this foretold individual. Darcy is determined to put an end to the vampire queen hoping to kill humanity’s biggest threat, but time will tell if she succeeds. The paths of different characters cross throughout the season, bringing together new and old friends and foes. In such a character-driven adventure, naturally, relationships also form and evolve, adding drama and tension to the suspense and mystery.
Upon discovering that season 2 had come out, I also discovered that season 3 was out as well, so I look forward to listening to that adventure soon. I also learned that there are two comics, Impact Winter, a prequel story set one year after the comet hit Earth, and Impact Winter: Rook set hundreds of years before the main events. We follow Rook, and I’m guessing, the journey that transforms him into a vampire. Impact Winter is such a cool and unique IP, and it’s great to see it expanding into other mediums. It’s precisely the sort of world, lore, and adventures that I think would be suited for the screen, be that in an interactive game form, or as a movie or TV show – either way, that would be something I’d love to be entertained by!
If you enjoy chilly apocalyptic worlds like Frost Punk or Snowpiercer, supernatural elements like prophecies and vampires, and character-driven narratives, then Impact Winter season 2 is well worth a listen!
